Four painters, working within an hour of each other

Sudarma grew up in a farming family outside Tabanan and painted the terraces around his village for a decade before he sold anything. He still walks the same ridge most mornings.

He works large and fast, usually finishing a canvas in three or four sittings while the weather he is painting is still in front of him. Anything that takes longer than a week, he says, stops being about the light.

Astawa trained in the Batuan style under his uncle from the age of eleven — a tradition of dense, dark, meticulously worked surfaces built up over weeks from thousands of small ink strokes.

He is one of a shrinking number of painters still working this way at full scale. A single canvas takes him four to eight weeks, and he releases perhaps six a year.

Sari studied graphic design in Denpasar before returning to painting full time. Her work sits between botanical study and abstraction — recognisable plants, but flattened, cropped hard and pushed toward pattern.

She paints almost entirely from her family compound in Penestanan: the same garden, at different hours, over and over.

Bagus surfed the Bukit peninsula for fifteen years before he painted it, and he draws water the way someone who has been held under by it draws water.

His palette is deliberately unromantic — no postcard turquoise. He paints the Indian Ocean the colour it actually is on the day he is looking at it.
