About this painting

Bagus surfed the Bukit for fifteen years before he painted it, and it shows in the drawing of the wave — the lip is thrown at the correct angle, the water in front of it is already drawing off the reef.

The palette is deliberately unromantic. No tropical turquoise: this is what the Indian Ocean actually looks like at Bingin in June, grey-green and heavy, with the light coming through the back of the wave rather than off its face.
