Sanur, First Light

Sanur faces east, so it gets the sunrise that the surf coast on the other side of the island never sees. Bagus painted this one at about six in the morning, when the light comes in so flat that the water and the sky end up the same colour and the only thing separating them is a single line of white.

The wave itself is nothing — knee-high, breaking on sand. That is the point. The same painter’s Bingin Swell is all force; this is the other half of the argument.
